03/04/25.  Match Report by Phil Morgan

Ashfield 3 in third place in the division faced a tough challenge from Grantham 3, placed fourth, whose own promotion hopes were still alive. As expected each game was hard-fought and tense. Grantham applied a lot of pressure on the top two boards from the start. Our team though found the first wins. Rob confidently scored the first and the second followed as Malcolm's opponent's position suddenly collapsed. Grantham's team held firm and continued to apply nagging pressure on the top boards. Nigel could never quite equalise from his opening disadvantage and succumbed to defeat. It came down to Andy's game. His opponent's two rooks found their way to the seventh rank. Very short on time, Andy was unable to find the correct defence. Grantham equalised, and the match was drawn.

We consulted our abacus. Ashfield 3 having completed their games now stand in second position. Only one team can now deny them promotion. This is Ashfield 4. A draw in their final game will clinch the runners-up spot. Whatever the outcome, our two teams in Division 4 have had fine seasons. Phil

02/04/25.  Ashfield '1' Promotion Hopes Suffer a Setback

Automatic promotion hopes suffered a setback last night, held to a 2 - 2 draw with just one fixture remaining, both Radcliffe & Bingham '1' and Beeston '1' are currently 2 points behind but with a game in hand. It seems quite likely that the three teams could all finish on 19 points, and that board points difference, presently very close, could decide which teams will be promoted. * Finally – Alex Combie beat GM Keith Arkell in last night’s 4NCL On-Line match only to find that the game was voided as they had played at the wrong time limit (45+5 instead of 45+15). (*Update from Neil Graham)

Division 2-  Wessex 'C' 1½-2½ Ashfield Anonymous 'C'
27/03/25.  Match Report by Phil Morgan

Ashfield 1 scored an important win which takes the team to the top of Division 2, for the first time this season, with two matches left to play. Dan was able to turn round an unpromising position out of the opening. The exchanges of the heavy pieces helped him. He was able to secure and quickly convert into a winning minor piece endgame with two dominant knights. John on Board 4 outplayed his opponent in the middle game and showed good control and technique to convert his advantage. The visitors hit back on Board 3. Neil misplayed the opening, lost a pawn and was given no chance to get back into the contest. The outcome always looked likely to come down to the top board. This seemed in hand when Steve went a piece up, but his opponent had a lot of compensation and built up a stong attack. Frank regained his piece, and it became a desperately hard fought battle. Steve just about clung on by his fingernails to draw his game and clinch the match win.

Up-date. Ashfield 2's win on Monday has been amended to 4-0. Nomads were penalised for playing an ineligible player. This improves the team's Points Difference score in our tight relegation battle. .
27/03/25.  Match Report by Phil Morgan

Ashfield Rapids, including debutant players on the top two boards, recorded their first victory in a very convincing manner. Top board Ben had a win and a loss. Adam on Board 2 and Ruthvik each scored two dominant wins. Ciaran and Cristina each had a win followed by a loss and Andrei had a draw followed by a win. Each player contibuted towards the 8.5-3.5 win. The 6 game League started with a 10-0 loss in November. This result shows the progress and learning of players in the team over this period. The Minor League has given several players their first opportunity to play team chess, with clocks and time controls. Hopefully they have enjoyed this, and will continue to play and enjoy chess.

25/03/25.  Match Reports by Phil Morgan

A very good night against Nomads for our teams at the Embankment Pub, Nottingham.
Neil kept faith with the team who had lost a few nights ago, and the players grasped at the chance of redemption. Phil, after missing a quicker win, converted a winning ending. Neil neutralised a dangerous attack and secured a draw. The remaining two games went to the wire. Bob was pressing from the opening against stout defence from Maurice. The game became double-edged. As the clocks ran down. Bob missed a mate in two, shortly before Maurice lost on time. Bob clinched the match win with 38 seconds left on his own clock. The top board position had looked very blocked with little piece activity. As this moved into a Quick-Play finish, Jerry blundered an exchange, but activated his pieces and went on to outplay Dave. This gave us our second win of the season. This was heartening against a team fielding two regular first team players. One game left, relegation still seems likely, but our coffin has yet to be nailed down. Our captain echoes Jon Laurie, ' We're doomed.' Bob goes with U.S. baseball legend, Yogi Berra, 'It ain't over till it's over.

A convincing team win. Rob scored an early win to put us on the front foot. Malcolm quickly added to this. Nigel offered a draw to seal the match win. Trevor added another victory to round things off. For now, Ashfield 4 and Ashfield 3 sit at the top of Division 4 with 1 game each to play. West Bridgford 3, two points behind with a game in hand, offer the main threat to a double team promotion.

22/03/25.  Match Reports by Phil Morgan

Ship's log - Our craft has well and truly hit the rocks. Phil's wretched run of results continues. Other members of the crew are now showing signs of catching his condition. Only Captain Neil seems unaffected. The end to this season's voyage can't come quick enough. To cope with the losses, Phil has retreated into a delirious state of alliteration.
View Scorecard :- Ashfield '2' ½-3½ West Bridgford '2'

Our team cruised to a 4-0 victory and reclaimed top spot in the division. Journeys back from Grantham can seem a long way after defeats. These seem much more enjoyable after rare, comprehensive team wins like this, against higher-rated opponents. With one game remaining, there's now a good chance that Ashfield 2 and Ashfield 4 will be fishing in the same waters next season.

20/03/25.  A Tale of Two Teams (Edited)

Last night's fixtures ended with mixed fortunes, Ashfield '2' playing host to West Bridgford lost any hope of avoiding relegation with just two games left, four points behind our closest rivals and a vastly inferior board average i can confirm that Ashfield '2' are relegated. Neil playing on board 2 ended his game with a draw and prevented a whitewash.
View Scorecard :- Ashfield '2' ½-3½ West Bridgford '2'

Meanwhile, Ashfield '4' made the long trip to Grantham, anticipating a very tough match against a team that had beaten our third team 4-0 in November. Outgraded on almost every board the match didn't go as we expected, Andrew playing on board 2 was first to finish, managing to escape what looked like a commanding attack he turned to offence and steered the game to victory. John playing board one with a pretty equal position spotted a tactic to win a bishop. Several moves later his opponent resigned, within minutes Alan playing on board 4 with one of his best performances of the year ended his game with a win and to top off what was already an amazing match Joe a piece up finished his game with a win. Ashfield '4' are now top with just one fixture remaining.

A night to forget, as Ashfield 1 fielding a slightly weaker side ended the night with draws for Steve and Neil. 13/03/25.  Minor League-Ashfield Rapids

Ashfield Rapids played their penultimate match in the Minor League last night, Radcliffe Rockets ran out reasonably comfortable winners, but it was by no means a walkover and Ashfield Rapids fought hard despite some large rating differences. We ended the match with 3 excellent wins thanks to Andrew, Ciaran and Ruthvik.

11/03/25.  Missed Opportuntity to go Top

Ashfield 3 let slip an Opportunity to go top of division 4 last night by losing 3–1 away to West Bridgford. With key players unavailable it was always going to be a tough match, With both Nigel on top board and Malcolm on board 3 securing a draw, the match ended with a loss. With only two fixtures remaining and both Ashfield 3 and Ashfield 4 sharing the top spot with West Bridgford on 12 points, we are at least safe from relegation and hopeful of promotion in this very competitive division. 07/03/25.  Match Report by Neil Graham

The relegation train has arrived at the Ashfield 2 station and whilst the team is yet to board there is little doubt that they will soon b e at the final destination of Division Three. This week’s match against promotion hopefuls Radcliffe and Bingham 1 followed the pattern of many others this season. Three games were lost as the local team were punished in the endings; there was a sole win for Ashfield when the away player blundered horribly in what looked to be a won game.

06/03/25.  Ashfield '2' Struggles Continue

In the Minor, Malcolm Jackson finished =2nd on 4 points, Rob Jarvis scored 2½, Both Andrew flint and Andrew Thompson scored 1½. You can view the Minor Final Ranking Crosstable - here:

* Congratulations to Malcolm. It's good to see him among the prize-winners again. This performance has given him a ratings jump of +31 in February. It seems to be a sign of the club's growing vibrancy that more of the club's players are now competing regularly in Congress events. Many of these play for our third and fourth teams. It can be no coincidence that both these teams have become more competitive in the Notts League this season. Bravo! by Phil Morgan *
27/02/25.  Match Report by Phil Morgan

Ashfield 4 continued their improvement with a close win over Gambit 6. Alan battled hard, but couldn't recover from an accident in the opening, which cost him a piece. Andrew finely judged a transition to a winning ending against his former team-mate. John scored a rock -solid draw. Joe always had his opponent under positional and time pressure and calmly broke through to secure the match win, the team's third win in quick succession. Ashfield 4 replace our third team at the head of the table for now, and have 2 games left to play. The division remains very tight.

25/02/25.  Match Report by Neil Graham

It was not a good night to be called “Neil” or “Graham” or indeed any combination of the names in the match between Ashfield 1 and Nomads 2. On Board Four the Nomads player comprehensively beat the local representative whilst on Board Three, the home player who had been winning for a considerable time made an atrocious blunder that lost the game. On now to more mundane information. Steve drew his ninth game out of nine and it was left to John to play a finely tuned ending to score the match winning point.

21/02/25.  Nottinghamsire League Results Summary by Phil Morgan

We did not have much to celebrate from Nottinghamsire League results in the first half of the season, and our teams had a particularly fallow period through November and December. 2025 has seen a significant and welcome change. Teams are at last finding wins, form and consistency. At time of writing three of our 4 League teams are in a postion of challenging for honours. Let's hope that this improvement can be sustained in the remainder of the season, and our second team too can join the party and find the winning recipe.

A commanding display from the home team secured their best win of the season. Captain Alan led the way with a swashbuckling attack. Andrew added to our lead, faithfully following his Nimzowitchian principles. Top board John's rock solid draw clinched the match win. Joe won the exchange in his game, activated his King to snuff out any counter play and soundly converted. The team are finding form at a good time. It remains a very tight division, with both our teams now challenging for honours.

12/02/25.  Match Report by Phil Morgan

The home team built up a strong initiative. We could not contain their young top guns on the top two boards, but slowly an unlikely fightback developed. Neil continued his excellent season, finding, with little time on his clock, a Queen sacrifice, which led to a decisive breakthrough and quick resignation. Deserted by his teammates, Phil at last found his way to securing his first win of the season to secure the match draw, and a valuable point from the match. With 4 games left, we're showing spirit and resilience in our battle against relegation. We're now on 5 points from 10 games. 5 points from our remaining 4 games might yet make things interesting.

Nigel was a pawn down in a double rook ending and his experienced opponent made no mistakes. The top board was halved and Bob squared the result with a win taking advantage of his opponent’s severe time-trouble. It was left to Phil to try and save a point but with lone queen against rooks and bishop it was too much and we went down by 2½-1½.

They say a good old ‘un beats a good young ‘un (or something similar). The combined age of the West Nottingham squad, which included 7 year old Elizabeth de Bono, was substantially less than any member of the Ashfield 3 team. Jonah Tomsett scored the away side’s only win and whilst all the others are improving players they were all clearly outclassed by the Ashfield seniors and a home win was never in doubt.
