28/11/25. Report by Phil Morgan

There was little between the teams on ratings. Glenn got another strong win. Jerry had a good draw with Black on Board 1. We couldn't add to this. On the night we were outplayed on the lower boards by a team pressing to return to Division 1. We start our festive break early and will resume with 3 games in January.

View Scorecard :- Ashfield '2' 1½ - 2½ Gambit '2'

We were helped by a default and also won two of the three boards played. Andy was better in his game but, with not much time left, was relieved to hear his opponent's resignation. Three wins and three losses so far in a very tight division. The last match before Christmas, home to unbeaten Central 1, will provide a stiffer test.

There was little between these two teams last season. Beeston pipped A1 to promotion. We followed through on their coat tails, after the decision to extend Division 1 to nine teams. Both teams have strengthened since. Beeston have a 2200 top board, whose win in this game takes him to 5/5 for the season. Our new recruit, Terry has added more punch to our middle order, and his win took him to 4.5/5. The teams could not be separated on the night. Steve claimed his fifth draw of the season, his only loss came to Jon Tait. Both teams have adapted very well on their return to the top tier.

A good time to find our first win of the season against relegation rivals. Neil got us off to a winning start. I had a good position without breaking through. Well down on the clock, I offered a draw. My opponent declined, and started to speed up his play. His next two moves were a mistake followed by a blunder, opening the door for me to win. Nigel, alert to the match situation, offered a draw to his opponent to seal the team win. Eddie reversed his loss to Jerry in a recent first team match.

We lost out narrowly to our higher-placed visitors. Our top 2 boards drew against higher rated opponents. Richard added a third draw. The match was decided by the win of Robert Willoughby, who remains a tough and hardy competitor.

A hard fought and memorable match. The visiting Golden Oldies team had an average age of 83. We fielded our own veteran, Ray on Board 2, on which the combined ages of the players was 180 years, both players having been born in the 1930s. The visitors took the lead with a fine win by Dorothy against in-form Adam, who had won his last 2 games. Stephen won his battle with Ray. Our team fought back. Sam and Ben overcame reverses to secure wins to draw the match. Thanks to our opponents for such a good game. Three of our team are in their first League season. Will any of these still be playing on at the age of their adversaries tonight?
*Ashfield 3's outcome against Grantham 3 will be included subsequent to the appeal's decision.*

Without the top boards from the previous game, our first team extended their winning run to three games. It was a tight game as expected. There were solid performances across the team. As in the previous game, Terry and Jerry scored wins. We have already surpassed our points score from the relegation season of 2023-24. We've adapted very well to the return to 5 board play, with Board 5 yielding an 80% return from the first 5 games of the season. We finished 4th in the League in 2022-3 on 11 points from 12 games. We currently occupy third place. It's good to see the team competitive again at the top level.

We were clearly second best on the night to an in-form team of three bright young guns, and a handy Board 4 playing his second game after a 16-year gap. Senith played very well against Glenn. I butchered the opening. Bob scored our consolation draw.

Paul's inclusion strengthened our team, and gave us a slight edge on ratings. A close game was anticipated, but we produced a very good all-round team performance and a decisive win. Take your screenshots now. We've soared to the dizzy heights of third place in the League.

A very good win, the second in a row for our new team. Congratulations to Sam on his first League win. The team is gathering in confidence. Adam scored a second successive win and stand-in Alan contributed an important draw. We're up to mid-table with 2 wins out of 4.

The visiting Division leaders were not at full strength. We could not quite make the most of this. Glenn posted another quick dominant win. Floundering in an unfamiliar opening, I scraped a draw. Bob added another draw. Jerry played very well on top board but couldn't hold a very strong attack from Julian, which secured the match draw. On the bright side after 3 close games, we're off the mark with our first point of the season.

A very hard fought match which could have gone either way. Our first team prevailed to claim their first win of the season. Dan scored an early draw, to which Terry added. The final three games went the distance. Oliver played very resourcefully to turn round his position and achieve a mating attack. John on his season's debut held a nervy opposite colours Bishop ending. Steve defended heroically against a fierce attack from Mike to clinch the team win. It felt a special win on the night. To bring us down to earth, the team's last win in Division 1 was achieved in similar fashion against Gambit 1 in November 2023. This turned out to be our sole win in that relegation season!

View Scorecard :- Ashfield '1' 3 - 2 Gambit '1'

Our third team remain unbeaten, gaining a very hard-earned draw against a strong visiting team. We took the initiative when a highly-motivated Andrew in a seemingly very drawish position saw an opportunity to aim for an endgame with winning chances, which he clinically converted. Paul Rees equalised for the visitors. John and Rob were able to hold their positions to seal the draw. The team is showing skill, solidity and spirit, and proving very hard to beat. Rob and Andrew especially are currently very active on the Congress circuit, which seems to be sharpening their competitive skills.

After 3 games, our third team remain our only unbeaten side. They scored a very good draw against a strong visiting team. John and Andrew, with the Black pieces, secured draws against much higher -rated opponents. Newark took the lead through Jim Wellington. A battle royal between Rob and Nigel followed. Nigel, formerly of Ashfield, who was down on time, uncorked a dangerous, surprise piece sacrifice. He followed this up powerfully, and Rob's defence needed to be very accurate to withstand this. With little time left, Nigel, may have missed a winning breakthrough. Rob seemed to have fended off the attack and be in a winning position when Nigel's flag fell. An exciting finale to the match, on a board surrounded by spectators, with mixed feelings on the outcome!

This match saw the welcome return to League action of Glenn, whose last appearance came in February 2024. He delivered a commanding, early win, which was to be our high point. Phil was held to a draw and Gambit surged to victory on their two White boards. There was no stopping Nikolai's army of advancing Queenside pawns, or Steve Hunter's vintage, crushing, combinative attacking piece play.

Beeston 3 were substantially stronger than might have been anticipated. Ben opened the scoring for Ashfield with Beeston replying on Board Four. The last two games went the distance and the tables were being put away at West Nottingham, the venue for Beeston matches, by the time a result was declared. Unfortunately, Adam was clearly lost which allowed the top board to accept a draw with both players having less than a minute left, although Beeston also held an advantage on this board.

An interesting evening on and off the board at Nottingham Student Union. As my opponent helped me to a very quick win, I headed for the Union bar at 8.50 for a celebratory drink. Thwarted, the bar does not do cash sales!… We moved to a 2-0 lead, when Dan won on time, helped at the death by his opponent, having made his move, omitting to press the clock. Steve found a clever perpetual check resource to secure at least a team draw. The opponents of Neil and Jerry made the most of their chances. Neil was bullied into defeat in time trouble. The final match in play was very double-edged. Ana played very resourcefully and quickly to nail the win. Our toughest task remained- to find our way out of the building. After going up and down various lifts and staircases, we found the exit door and button. Modern life has its challenges.

Mansfield have won the Notts League for the last four seasons, but in 2024/5 were almost pipped by University. Can they maintain their run? They were pressed by Ashfield 1 on their return to Division One. The home side took an early lead after Steve blundered a piece, and soon after a draw was agreed on Board Four. The remaining boards were closely contested with the fifth board drawn with neither side gaining any tangible advantage. Shortly after Terry, making his debut, broke through the kings side to even the score. Andy, returning after a long break away from Ashfield, was involved in a time scramble and unfortunately was unable to hold the game so we lost by the narrowest margin.

We slipped to a close defeat in our opening game of the season. Bob had an early mishap, dropping his Queen. Phil equalised. His opponent snatched a pawn in the opening, at a cost of leaving his King in the centre, which invited a winning attack. Nigel earned a very solid draw. Down to Jerry's game and his usual Blitz finish. He's often seen the team through in such situations. For once, he seemed to overpress in search of a win and was made to pay for this.

It was left to the top boards last night after both Andrew and Alan succumbed to stronger opponents. Meanwhile, Rob playing on board 2 managed to steer a complicated position to victory, This left John in the position of needing to win. After forcing the exchange of queens, 2 pawns up, with over 80 moves played and minutes on the clock with the prospect of a pawn promotion, the win was secured and a share of the spoils.

A3 v Beeston 2 The team skippered by Alan have now achieved promotions in the last two seasons as Ashfield 4. Their prize for this has been to find themselves re-christened as Ashfield 3. They hit the ground running in Division 3 with a well-earned team win. Rob scored a dominant win. John secured a safe draw on Board 1. Alan's opponent found a clever mating attack. Board 3 would decide. Despite facing a strong attack, Andrew calmly and confidently saw through the complications against a higher rated opponent, to clinch the match win.

A5 v West Nottingham 3. Our new fifth team faced tough opponents in their opening game. Three of our team were making Notts League debuts. Ben and Adam had played in the Minor League last season. Our team was stiffened by the introduction of Ray, probably the League's oldest current player. Our players fought hard but were gradually outplayed and lost on three boards. Ray did very well to save his endgame and earn a draw under considerable time pressure.
